It's so much easier and cheaper than it's been in over 20 years.

Starting August 1st, 2012, the BAR changed the smog technician licensing requirements to two separate licenses. There is a Smog “Inspector’s” license and a Smog “Repair” Technician license.

The following information is the list to meet the exam requirements for each license:

What if you don't have enough prior experience?

The BAR is no longer allowing just training to be a substitute for experience for license requirements. You will be required to obtain the necessary automotive repair shop experience to meet the licensing requirements.

Smog Inspector's License Requirements

1. Either

  • A

    Successfully complete the 68-hour Level-1 course, OR

  • B

    Show proof of a minimum of 2 years automotive repair shop experience; AND prove certification of all three ASE areas in A6, A8 and L1.

  • C

    Show proof of a minimum of 2 years automotive repair shop experience; AND successfully complete the Diagnostic and Repair course.

  • D

    Show proof of having a degree in automotive technology AND at least one year of repair shop experience.

  • E

    Show proof of having a certificate in an automotive technology program of at least 720 hours (with at least 280 hours of engine performance related courses) AND at least one year of repair shop experience.

2. Complete or pass the 28 hours Level-2 course.

About Us

Aztek Smog Training offers you a comprehensive smog technician training program. We are offering Level 1, Level 2, BAR Specified, Update and Citation classes to automotive professionals wishing to obtain their Smog Inspector/Repair licenses through the Bureau of Automotive Repair.

We aim to provide the highest level of education and it’s our goal to be instrumental in training new and existing technicians on the principles of inspection and repair of state required smog inspections.
